Allama Shibli Nomani
Allama Shibli Nomani (1857–1914) was a renowned Islamic scholar, historian, philosopher, poet, and one of the most celebrated writers in Urdu literature. Born in Azamgarh (U.P., India), he played a key role in the Islamic intellectual revival of the subcontinent and laid the foundation for critical historical and religious writing in Urdu.
Education & Influence
Shibli studied Arabic, Persian, and Islamic jurisprudence at an early age. Later, he became associated with Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and taught at Aligarh Muslim University. However, his vision differed, emphasizing the need to balance Islamic values with modern education. He later joined Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow, where he further promoted Islamic scholarship.
He traveled extensively to Turkey, Egypt, Syria, and Iraq, meeting scholars and gathering research material for his books. These journeys greatly influenced his historical and comparative religious writings.
