Mohammed Hussein Heikal

Born on August 20, 1888, in Kafr Ghannam, Mansoura, Egypt, Heikal pursued legal studies, earning a B.A. in Law in 1909 and a Ph.D. from the Sorbonne University in Paris in 1912. During his time in Paris, he authored Zaynab (1913), considered the first authentic Egyptian novel, which marked a turning point in Arabic literary tradition.
Upon returning to Egypt, Heikal practiced law for a decade before transitioning to journalism. He contributed to Al Jarida and co-founded Al Siyasa, the official newspaper of the Liberal Constitutional Party, where he served as editor-in-chief.
Political Career
Heikal’s political involvement included serving as Minister of State for the Interior Ministry in 1937 and as Minister of Education in 1940. In his role as Minister of Education, he implemented reforms such as decentralizing education by establishing educational zones and promoting nationally oriented curricula.
