Paulo Coelho
Paulo Coelho is a globally acclaimed Brazilian novelist and lyricist, best known for his spiritual and philosophical storytelling that resonates with readers worldwide.
Early Life and Personal Journey
Born on August 24, 1947, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Paulo Coelho de Souza exhibited a passion for writing from a young age. However, his parents, concerned about his unconventional aspirations, committed him to a mental institution three times during his teenage years. After being released at 20, Coelho briefly enrolled in law school but soon dropped out to embrace a nomadic lifestyle, traveling through South America, North Africa, Mexico, and Europe during the 1960s and 70s.
Upon returning to Brazil, he worked as a songwriter, collaborating with renowned Brazilian artists like Elis Regina and Raul Seixas. In 1974, he was arrested and tortured by the military government for alleged “subversive” activities. A pivotal moment in his life occurred in 1986 when he undertook the 500-mile pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, inspiring his first major book, The Pilgrimage (1987). Wikipedia
